Katy Perry’s new album ‘Prism’ inspired by split from Russell Brand
Katy Perry has opened up about the inspiration behind her new album, revealing that she originally wanted to call it ‘Adult Reality’ after her separation from ex-husband Russell Brand.
“I'm not the kind of person who is always like, 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger'. I was in bed for about two weeks,” the star told The Sunday Times of her marriage breakdown. “I was pretty f**ked, yes. It hurt a lot.”
While the star ultimately chose to name her new album ‘Prism,’ the brunette beauty said that the break-up gave her a good knock.
“Although I had the outward self-identity I didn't have the inner kind. My self-worth was in someone else's hands which is never a good idea, because it can be taken from you at any time. And it was, and it was shattered."
The 28-year-old’s No.1 single ‘Roar’ is all about sticking up for yourself, with the star adding: “People talk about bullying, but you can be your own bully in some ways. You can be the person who is standing in the way of your success, and that was the case for me."
Going on to talk about her happiness while she was married, the singer told E! News that she “really loved it.”
“It was a new, fun, exciting journey. But I like how I am now, and I think all things happen for a reason,” she said. “If you are not happy with something, you should change it. So I went to a lot of therapy, and finally, I am able to speak up for myself: You are going to hear me roar!”
The tone of her new album is noticeable different to ‘Teenage Dream’ with Katy saying that she was “so high on that cotton-candy cloud, and then it's like I got punched in the face and kicked down the stairs a couple of times.
"I had to face the reality that things are not always on cloud nine. I was down and out, I'd lost hope, all of my self-confidence had been shattered."
But it seems that K-Pez has now happily moved on with her new beau John Mayer, admitting that she had her eye on the 36-year-old long before they hooked up.
“I actually am dating my crush,” she told W Magazine.
