REVIEW: Jason Derulo’s ‘Tattoos’ tour hits Sydney
Last night, Jasaaaan Deruloooo- the man behind acclaimed hits like ‘Talk Dirty to Me’ and ‘Marry Me’ took the stage at the Qantas Credit Union Arena to not only serenade a horde of screaming girls but flex his muscles in a strangely fascinating ‘variety’ show of beefed-up backup dancers, twerking ballerinas and an EDM DJ with a mohawk.
The almost two-hour long show was MC’d by DJ Papo 305 (A.K.A Joker Music) who introduced both Derulo and his group of hugely talented backup dancers in between his own DJ sets. His EDM style felt slightly off-brief but still entertaining and would have been even more so if he didn’t insist on shouting "hashtag Joker Music" into the mic during every solo set. We get it.
After an opening which saw a young ‘thug’ spray paint ‘Jason’ and ‘Derulo’ onto a projected red-brick wall, the first glipse at the international star came in the form of his huge hit ‘In My Head’ which was followed by Jason confessing he was “stupid in love,” and the crowd screaming with delight as ‘Stupid Love’ blasted form the speakers.
A few more songs followed closely behind, before the man of the hour took to the mic and told Sydneysiders that apparently Melbourne think "Sydney don't know how to party." But don’t worry guys, Derulo has our back: “Every time I'm in sydney I have the time of my life," he assured us. When are artists going to get over that faux Sydney/Melbourne beef?
In between performing his massive hits like ‘Ridin solo’ and ‘Watcha Say’ Derulo snuck in a few renditions of some major chart toppers like Lorde’s ‘Royals,’ ‘Blurred Lines’ and Kanye’s ‘All of the Lights.’ This was an interesting choice considering Derulo is a chart-topper himself and has more than enough number ones to fill the full show.
When ‘Marry Me’ came on you could just hear every girls’ heart flutter and as he got down on one knee, all the die-hards in the front row imagined he was singing it to them. You could just feel the sting of jealousy from up in the stands.
When Derulo asked five girls to come up on stage so he and his backup dancers could do pushups with them sitting on their backs, that same jealous sting radiated again (his impeccable body perfectly complements his amazing voice and dancing skills).
Apart from all the onstage antics, we can see why Derulo has so many adoring fans and number one hits, his impressive a cappelas were a true testament to his style and singing ability, he was a standout performer and rocked the show alongside a pretty amazing group of dancers and a ‘Fresh’ new rapper. Excuse the pun.
