Sound Relief Raises $3m
Last weekend's Sound Relief concerts were a huge success, with over $5 million raised for victims of Victoria's bushfires and Queensland's floods.
According to organisers, over 120,000 people attended the two events held in Sydney and Melbourne. The MCG show attracted 80,000 punters alone, making it the biggest paying audience ever at any Australian concert or charity event.
With Coldplay, Taylor Swift and Kings of Leon booked to play alongside a host of local acts, the two simultaneous concerts were the most ambitious charity events ever staged in the country. That said, the real highlights were all homegrown.
Hunters and Collectors reformed for the event and performed together for the first time in 11 years; Ice House gave their first concert in 15 years and finished with the iconic 'Great Southern Land'; Kylie Minogue led the Melbourne crowd in a rendition of 'I Still Call Australia Home' and Wolfmother version. 2.0 proved they were still relevant.
Still, the biggest round of applause in Sydney was saved for John Farnham's 'You're the Voice' collaboration with Coldplay. Meanwhile, the reformed Midnight Oil (fronted by Environment Minister Peter Garrett) stole the show in Melbourne, with Garrett pulling out his famous dancing shoes especially for the occasion.
While questions have been raised about the $3 million that event organisers are claiming in overhead costs, they've promised to provide a full accounting breakdown on the website in the coming weeks.
MTV also did their bit by donating all the proceeds from the Vodafone MTV Australia Awards 2009 ticket sales to the Victorian Red Cross Bushfire fund. All tickets sold out within a matter of weeks, while VIP Packages were auctioned at Grays Online. Big thanks to everyone who got involved and made a difference!
