Check out the next stripped-back superstars:
Growing up in the sweltering bushland of Northern Queensland, brothers Adam & Nathan Lyons learned piano from a young age and relocated to the glittering shores of the Gold Coast during their high school years. They have since settled in Melbourne, after returning from a two-year stint in Manchester, UK. From creaky, howling folk dirges to sparkling dream-pop ballads the Melbourne-based duo distills recollections of past homes, old friends and lost loves into a back catalog of songs that is instantly relatable.
Esmé is a Sydney based singer/songwriter who hails from a small town (Tumbarumba) in the snowy mountain region of Australia. Described as the shy one of her 7 siblings, she was homeschooled and lived with her family until the age of 16, where she then she left school and home to begin her journey with music. With her eclectic upbringing, it’s any wonder she writes in a genre-defying style. Her music is understated in its instrumentation, yet consuming with artistic production and recognizable by an incomparable voice, that has been dubbed as ‘alien-esque’.
Openly admitting you love U2 and Coldplay is rare these days, but for LOS LEO (aka Tom Montesi) that’s all he heard coming out of the family stereo in suburban Adelaide. Often it’s the smallest moment that can spark a new path and for LOS LEO that crossroad was receiving an acoustic guitar on his 8th birthday. Learning his favourite pop songs developed into writing originals and by his late teens, he was following the dream, starting a band with his mates. Band comps lead to support slots, which lead to solo shows and just as the vibe was building…they broke up. Sure, putting another band together might have worked, but for Tom he thought he’d go it alone. So far everything about LOS LEO has been “under the radar”. He may live in a small city at the bottom end of Australia and there might be a mountain of songs written in his bedroom that are yet to see the light of day, but here’s the thing about honest songwriting and a voice as enchanting as Tom’s, it’s only a matter of time before people start falling in love.
Baby Blue, centered around Rhea Caldwell, have been turning heads with their infectious melodies and live show which is a joy to behold. Lead singer and songwriter Rhea Caldwell performs with an ease few can claim to possess, tapping into sounds of 60s surf rock with a sprinkling of Americana and indie pop. The result is charming and considered concoction from an exciting new talent to watch. Baby Blue is ultimately a marker for Caldwell’s progress as both a songwriter and human, the trials and triumphs she faces finding their place in songs that appeal instantly. There’s zero pretension at play here, just a desire to connect with others and make sense of the world through music.
MTV Unplugged Melbourne will be filmed in front of a live audience on 25 and 26 July at Melbourne’s Cobblestone Pavilion at Meat Market.
