Daniel Merriweather - Change
So if you're unsure who should be your new favourite band, MTV can help! This month, it’s homegrown singer Daniel Merriweather; a blue-eye soul boy who’s set to take Oz by storm.
His rich, honey-tonsilled tones have already been compared to those of musical legend Stevie Wonder– not bad for a 27-year-old from Melbourne's Dandenong Ranges.
Dan's been grafting away in the music biz since 2002 and in the early days guested on tracks by Aussie hip-hopper Phrase and dance act Disco Montego. However, it was when he hooked up with international super-DJ Mark Ronson that the disco ball really started rolling.
Daniel lent his vocals to Ronson’s funky cover of The Smiths’ classic 'Stop Me' (If You Think That You’ve Heard This One Before) and was suddenly a huge name overseas. The track reached No 2 in the UK in 2007 and spurred Daniel on to embark on a full-time solo career.
His debut album ‘Love & War’, which is about to drop on these shores, is the result of nearly two years in the studio with his knob-twiddling mate Ronson and the result is a musical melting pot of funk, soul, R&B and jazz. Funk-led first tune, Change, and gutsy ballad, Red, are already getting the cool kids excited.
Don’t just take our word for it, check him out for yourselves.
