Full Biography
For MTV’s newest VJ Ruby Rose, it’s all in the genes.
When your godfather and name-sake is boxing great Lionel Rose, and your granddad was the last living ANZAC, what you get is a gal who knows what it takes to last the distance, and last the distance she has….
MTV first spied their ‘jewel in the rough’ at the Melbourne VJ Search auditions. As one of the first hopefuls in line, Ruby’s striking appearance and unique style instantly made her stand out from the crowd. However, it was her quirky and eclectic personality that made MTV execs decide Ruby was definitely worth remembering. Indeed, after three more weeks of searching and thousands of auditions, Ruby’s sparkle hadn’t faded, and she was selected as a finalist.
Forced to endure round after round of wild and crazy stunts issued by Jackass superstar Bam Margera, Ruby saw herself drinking 100 shots in 100 minutes and vomiting on air to prove she has what it takes to be an TV VJ! MTV were sold, and thus, a new VJ was born…..
A country girl at heart, Ruby had a bohemian childhood, moving around Australia before finally settling in Melbourne. Her distinctively edgy look led her to enter the Girlfriend Model Search in 2002 to which she came in second to friend and now international supermodel Catherine McNeil. And while it lead to entrance into the VCA, several successful years of modeling and door bitch duties at one of Melbourne’s leading live music venues The Evelyn Hotel, Ruby craved attention for more than just her looks.
“Being a model there is always something they want to change. Whether they want someone a little bit skinnier, a little bit taller, a little bit prettier, but MTV want you be yourself….not censoring anything and not conforming to anything," Ruby said.
Since coming onto the scene just over a year ago, Ruby has been in very high demand. Her presenting skills have gone from strength to strength which has seen her bought on as co host for the fifth season of MTV’s The Lair with MTV VJ Darren McMullen. She’s hosted Yen Woman Of The Year Awards , Summer Gay Day, Instant Rockstar Party and the In The Mix Top 50 DJ Awards night to name a few.
She has been an on-air favourite at 2day FM with a weekly spot for a month with Tim and Biggsy, and she also presented three awards at this year’s ARIA’s and has been up for some pretty major awards herself including Best Presenter at the Dolly Teen Choice Awards, Best TV Presenter at the Cosmo Fun Fearless Female Awards, ‘2008 Influential Gay Person of the Year’ at the Same Same Awards and of course, ‘Favourite Female Personality’ at the 2009 ASTRA Awards where she took out the title from underneath favourites Antonia Kidman, Kristy Hinze and Charlotte Dawson. She has also appeared as a guest on Rove and appeared in Who’s Sexiest People issue alongside Angelina Jolie and David Beckham.
All this in under two years. To have accomplished so much and made such an impact in her first year on air is testament to her diverse talents and her future in the entertainment industry. We loves ya Ruby!
