Exclusive: Nathaniel reveals the secret to cracking the Aussie music scene after X Factor!
Following the success of his debut single ‘You’ which saw the Aussie soul/pop singer rise to home grown stardom and international recognition, comes the latest chart-topper for Nathaniel Willemse.
‘Live Louder’ combines his passion and love for an old school funk/soul vibe with a modern twist reminiscent of one of the biggest singer/songwriters in the world-Pharrell Williams.
As a self-professed laid back kind of guy, originally hailing from South Africa, there’s a lot to love about not only his easy going attitude and zest for life, but his incredible voice and catchy tunes that have everyone up on their feet. It’s no surprise ‘Live Louder’ just achieved Gold status here in Australia. It’s pretty damn good.
It’s also hard to believe that this amazing talent didn’t make it all the way on X Factor or Australian Idol, as is the case for so many fresh Aussie musicians and artists trying to crack the scene.
So what’s Nathaniel’s secret to making it to the top? Passion.
“There are two different types of passion,” he said. “There’s passion where you wake up every morning and go to sleep every night and the only thing you can think about is doing music and writing songs.”
“The second type of passion is how there are artists and musicians who are content with just doing pop gigs every week and doing this is a hobby.” No points for guessing which type got him to the gold status; the Aussie pop star has clearly mastered the first type.
His determination finally saw him working with the DNA guys, flying overseas, performing in showcases in front of one of the biggest record execs, L.A. Reid (who has brought the world Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson) and “fingers crossed” finishing his first album at the end of this year.
“We’ve seen it in the past with these singing competitions and some people make it pretty far and then nothing happens after that,” he continues. “I think we get put into this element of surprise where we’re on stage, on TV, we’re on this massive high and then it doesn’t work out the way we want it to work out and then we get a little bit disheartened and stop.”
“So, I had a game plan and I’m like, man I want go all the way.”
“If I do want to win X Factor for example and if I don’t? I want to make sure this is a huge career for me, but there’s a huge level of passion to be able to do what we want to do, but the best advice I can give to anyone looking to do what I’m doing is to work on your craft.”
The ‘You’re beautiful’ singer isn’t totally against the reality TV path of fame though, admitting that putting yourself out there is an “awesome way to get into the industry.”
Some definite wise words there from one of Australia’s biggest rising stars. Inspired by The Jackson’s, Pharrell and “the ‘Blurred Lines’ type of modern, soul-pop vibe”, this latest single has us begging for the album!
