From sad goodbyes to pop career resurrections, reigniting old beefs to juicy new controversies – 2011 was the year that served it up thick and fast!

We look back at some of the biggest and best MTV CLASSIC stories from the year that was…

THEY'RE BACK!

Backstreet Boys, Blur, The Cranberries, No Doubt , Culture Club , Garbage, The Darkness , Limp Bizkit , Black Sabbath, yep, even Darren Hayes from Savage Garden – if you were big in the 80s, 90s or 00s, it seemed like 2011 was the perfect year to re-ignite the zealous passion of your fans.

Whether it was hitting the road or dropping fresh material in the hopes that it would reach the pointy end of the charts, it didn’t take much to get these ‘retired’ muso’s back in the limelight and plundering their catalogue of back hits…

But nothing got MTV CLASSIC viewers excited like the news that Blink 182 were finally ending their extended hiatus, with Travis Barker revealing that a new album is finally on the way!

BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!

It used to be that if you were over the age of 30 you were destined for the purgatory of Cruise Liner tours... But now, being a music veteran doesn’t mean it’s time to hang up your sequinned leotard or goat-horns…

Just ask Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nickelback, Lenny Kravitz and Metallica, who are all cooking up new albums or worldwide tours… It just goes to prove that some things really do get better with age.

WE SAY GOODBYE

While we said hello to a whole bunch of mega stars who announced their return, 2011 also saw us saying a sad goodbye to others, like Weezer star Mikey Welsh, Elizabeth Taylor, Clarence Clemons, Nate Dogg, Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore, 'Grease' legend Jeff Conaway, rapper Heavy D, Alice In Chains' Mike Starr, and of course, Amy Winehouse.

Meanwhile, 2011 also marked a year of remembrance for Queen legend Freddie Mercury, whose legacy continues to shine brighter than ever, and Nirvana, who celebrated the 20 year anniversary of 'Nevermind'.

We also said farewell to R.E.M, The White Stripes and Silverchair who called it a day, while The Black Eyed Peas and Diddy just say goodbye for now with a hiatus…

CONFLICTS AND CONTROVERSY

It may have been years since they were both laid to rest, but Biggie and Tupac’s long-burning feud was resurrected thanks to leaked songs. Tracks weren’t the only things that were leaked – fans were shocked when some rather erm, revealing footage of Tupac hit the web!

Meanwhile, Lil Kim sharpened her claws and used Nicki Minaj as a scratching post when her title as reigning femcee was challenged...

The Game dropped a bombshell on 50 Cent when he urged his one-time label mate to come out of the closet once and for all, while Gunners frontman Axl Rose ‘beefed up’ and shocked fans with his heavy-weight appearance...

And of course, there was the sentencing of Michael Jackson’s personal physician Dr Conrad Murray – who was finally sentenced to four years jail in November, much to the Jackson family’s disappointment…

Also lapping up column inches in 2011 was the shocking claim by Trinidad model Shenelle Scott that Jay-Z has a secret nine-year-old son, while Usher was forced to take swift action when his ex-wife accused him of doing drugs…

And then, there was a temporary ‘forced’ hiatus of kinds for Kings Of Leon, thanks to Caleb Followill’s bizarre "drunken" onstage rant!

But in amongst the shocking scandals, there were the happy times for Pink and Mariah Carey, who both welcomed little bundles of joy into the world!
