He’s sober, is best buds with a gay icon and has left his manic alter ego Slim Shady by the wayside. No, Eminem hasn’t had a complete personality transplant, he’s just discovered the “the tolerant new me”.

Recently, the 37-year-old rapper gave a revealing interview to the New York Times, just ahead of the release of his album ‘Recovery’ on June 21. As it turns out, the once-outspoken MC, who was infamous for horror-comic fantasies, violent musings about ‘bitches’ and off-colour rants about homophobia, is now a supporter of gay marriage!

When asked whether he’d like to see gay marriage approved in Michigan (where he’s based) Em replied:

“I think if two people love each other, then what the hell? I think that everyone should have the chance to be equally miserable, if they want.

"It's the new tolerant me! My overall look on things is a lot more mature than it used to be."

He’s also talked in depth about his long battle with painkillers and anti-depressant drugs, to which his new album ‘Recovery’, is dedicated.

He said: "I used to get pills wherever I could. I was just taking anything that anybody was giving to me."

Despite trying rehab, Em said he has his biological daughter Hailie Jade and his two adopted daughters, Lainey and Whitney to thank for inspiring his recovery.

"I felt like Bugs Bunny in rehab. When Bugs Bunny walks into rehab, people are going to turn and look. People at rehab were stealing my hats and pens and notebooks and asking for autographs. I couldn't concentrate on my problem."

When asked how he stayed sober, the rapper replied:

“My kids, and also I see a rehab counselor once a week. I’ve been clean for two years. …I love them so much, and they’ve helped me through so many things.”

Clearly, his bro-mance with Elton John has revealed a new side of Em! As for the fate of Slim Shady, we’ll just have to wait and see.

“Shady still exists. But I don’t think the subjects on this record call for, you know, bring the chainsaws and axes out and murder everyone on this record. There was so much stuff like that off the last record that I felt like I was starting to run it into the ground. I think consciously I went in a different direction with this record.”

Eminem’s ‘Recovery’ Is Out On June 21.
