MTV: Hi Erick! You’ve DJ’d all over the world - what makes performing for an Australian audience a unique experience?
Morillo: I feel like Australia is like a lost paradise – it’s so far away, so not a lot of people in the world know how wonderful Australia is and the great energy that people give you here. I think it was 1994 or 1995 that I came here for the first time – it’s amazing and I always look forward to coming back.
MTV: What’s been the weirdest or most interesting thing you’ve seen while touring the globe?
Morillo: I don’t know about weird, but interesting, I would say playing at the Love Parade in Leeds in England. It was about probably nine years ago, and being able to play in front of I think it was 280,000 people, that was probably one of the most joyous moments of my life. I’d never experienced energy to that degree, it was pouring rain and everybody just went absolutely nuts - probably one of the best memories of my life.
MTV: How has technology changed the DJ scene since you started?
Morillo: I’ve been DJing since I was eleven and technology has changed since then a whole lot. Back then it was just turntables and a mixer – vinyl – which basically has disappeared now you know. Now I don’t even use CDs…I put all my music on USB sticks. So when I show up to a gig everything is in a little box this big, instead of carrying records like I used to carry back in the day. Technology has really changed everything.
MTV: You’ve worked with P Diddy in the past, what was that experience like?
Morillo: Working with P Diddy was an absolutely amazing experience. He is such a workaholic and has such great work ethic but then knows how to party as well. It was just a pleasure, he’s such a talented individual.
MTV: Who else would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Morillo: Prince for sure is at the top of my list. Madonna is somebody else I want to work with. Quincy Jones I would love to work with.
MTV: And finally, can you tell us a bit about your new album?
Morillo: Absolutely, in 2012 I have a new album coming out, I have a group called ‘Sympho Nympho’ and it’s with Harry 'Choo Choo' Romero and Jose Nunez. We’re going to be featuring artists like Busta Rhymes, Dizzee Rascal, Pitbull, Marc Anthony, Jessica Sutta from the Pussycat Dolls…2012 is my year. Grammys in 2013 – look out world I’m going to reclaim my throne!
