He may have risen to fame on ‘Aussie Idol,’ but unlike plenty of fellow reality stars who either grow far too big for their boots or merely disappear into obscurity – the Melbourne-born singer seems to have found the perfect balance.
Yes, he has a cheeky arrogance, but the 20-year-old - who scooped an incredible 4 gongs at the ‘NZ Music Awards’ last year - also has the talent to back it up.
And now, following the success of his second record ‘From The Inside Out,’ the hitmaker’s back with an explosive, upbeat new single, ‘Loud’ that’s effortlessly smashing the top of the ARIA Charts.
MTV caught up with the superstar Down Under to talk partying in LA, his shopping addiction and having better abs than Chris Brown!
MTV: So Stan, you recently performed on the Chris Brown tour how was that?
Stan: The Chris Brown tour was so awesome. That was a lot of fun because they had such good catering, the catering was the bomb. That was the best thing (laughs). No, it was awesome, I was really sick though. I actually got pulled onto the tour two days before it started and went on the tour to be a special guest, singing with Jess (Mauboy). We did a duet, 'What Happened To Us' and it was cool doing that. Jess ripped it up, she was the bomb. Justice Crew before her ripped it up, and then Chris came on and just, you know, finished it off and it was just overall an awesome show!
MTV: Did you get to hang out with Chris much backstage?
Stan: Yeah we caught up with Chris out back a couple of times, he's pretty chilled. He's tall, skinny, got abs like mine. I've got eight of them, he might have like six (laughs).
MTV: Your new single ‘Loud’ is a really upbeat dance track. Is this more the direction you want to go in?
Stan: I guess my new track is quite dancey and club-like, but that’s only one element of what I'll be doing. I love the pop stuff and I love dancing. I love singing ‘Loud’ it’s so fun. I've been singing it at a lot of shows I’ve been doing lately and it just goes off! I sing 'Black Box,' I sing 'Choose You' and all these other songs that I’ve done and they're like "yeaah," but ‘Loud’ comes on and people go crazy! So I guess I'll be doing a lot of stuff like this, but not all like this.
MTV: You’re working on your third album, what can fans expect from it?
Stan: It’s really exciting, the stuff I’ve been doing lately is really fun and really alive and just taking people on a new adventure. My last album ‘From The Inside Out’ was quite deep and personal and fun at the same time, but now I’ve shown people who I am and where I come from, I want to take them to the place where I am now and how I feel now. I'm a clown, I’m happy, I’m blessed and now it’s time to have those songs which are declarations of celebrations, and I guess that’s what 'Loud' is. It’s the opening number and the next step for me.
MTV: Any news on when it’s expected to drop?
Stan: Hopefully we will be bringing that out at the end of this year, or maybe next year. But we're working on that at the moment and I'm really excited. It’s gonna be good!
MTV: You filmed your new video in LA – any fun stories from your time there?
Stan: It was so awesome, so cool. It was a lot of fun. I went shopping heaps. I've got a problem with shopping, I just can't stop… We went to all these, like, real rich places, like Barneys and all these fashion stores and stuff and when we went there I felt like a bum coz I'm real chilled and I don't care what I wear sometimes. And when I was in America I was like, nobody knows me so I'm just gonna be rugged, which was the worst thing. I felt so ashamed!
One other thing I noticed is that women over the age of 40 or 50 all looked the same. Their faces are all like this (pulls back face) and they try to have lips like me... or they're all trying to be like Angelina Jolie!
MTV: And in the clip fans get to see you really busting out some dance moves!
Stan: (Laughs) I was just jumping around dancing, but I just kept on laughing coz some of the guys were really cracking me up and they were teaching me like the ghetto slang… It was so fun working with them and just dancing around.
MTV: Is it a big ambition of yours to crack the States?
Stan: For me to crack the US market would be awesome. But for now I'm just focusing on what strategic steps I need to take in order for me to be over there. It’s a little bit difficult, but I think with the right team, right people, right songs, right image, right me… I probably need to get a 10 pack... I think with all the right ingredients we could do it over there. At the moment we're just kind of taking it little step by little step, but eventually I'll be over there and I'll be booty poppin’ with my wife Beyoncé!
MTV: Speaking of Beyoncé, we know you’re a big fan of hers - what do you make of her new single ‘Run The World (Girls)?’
Stan: I actually really love it, and oh man she is looking so fine! She’s amazing.
