And that’s exactly how 50,000 eager music fans spent their favourite public holiday, hitting up ‘Big Day Out 2012!’
Taking over the Sydney Showground, a sea of singlets, swimmers and standard big shades unleashed their inner rock, pop and indie child as they toasted the greatest country on earth!
And not even the odd patches of rain could keep punters from lapping up the festival fun!
Boy and Bear and The Jezabels got to work early, warming up the buzzing crowd on the main stage, before leading the way for Big Day Out regulars The Hilltop Hoods and The Living End.
By the time My Chemical Romance took their places, the sun was scorching – but even the heat couldn’t distract from lead singer Gerard Way’s new fiery orange locks!
After paying credit to fellow acts including Soundgarden and “Mr “f***ing” Kanye West, the New Jersey quartet got on with what they do best and made the Olympic Park dance!
Next up were the uber smooth rock kids Kasabian.
Heavily cheered on by plenty of fellow Brits, complete with Union Jack flags in the inner circle, the too-cool-for-school four piece kicked off with hits including, ‘Where Did All The Love Go’ and ‘Underdog,’ before throwing in a few newbies like ‘Re-wired.’
As the inevitable crowd surfing began and beers were chugged then chucked, frontman Tom Meighan handed over the vocal reins to guitarist Serge Pizzorno for fans to “get loose" to ‘Vlad The Impaler.’
Turning up the heat and the volume even more were festival pros Soundgarden, who proved that after 15 years away from Oz, they’d been sorely missed.
Marking their hotly-anticipated return with hits like ‘Black Hole Sun,’ and ‘Burden In My Hand,’ the heavy hitting group, led by Chris Cornell, rocked until the sun came down.
With glow sticks a-ready, Mexican waves running non-stop through the showground and the crowd well and truly revved up, it was finally time for the most hyped act of the day.
Ready to ‘Run This Town’ a modest 15 minutes late, Kanye West made sure all eyes were on him as he made his mighty entrance!
Proving he can’t “get much higher,” the rap legend was immersed into the air on a smoke-filled platform as he belted out ‘Dark Fantasy.’
Making his way to his super slick all-white stage, the main man was hi-fived as he strutted through the audience and took his place.
"Australia put your hands up right now," he demanded as he ran through tracks like ‘Power,’ ‘Can’t Tell Me Nothing,’ and ‘Good Life.’
Joined by a bunch of bendy ballerina-type backing dancers, the hip hop genius showed he was well worth the all-day wait as he entertained with his famous lyrics, a touch of Akon style auto-tuning and a pretty impressive laser light show that mimicked golden rain.
The singer also made time for plenty of crowd pleasers like ‘Gold Digger,’ and ‘Love Lockdown’ and his self-confessed “favourite” release ‘All Falls Down,’ featuring Syleena Johnson.
And for those who weren’t quite ready to turn off ‘All of the Lights’ after the rapstar’s 90 minute set, it was off to the green stage to check out Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
And while the ‘Rock ‘N Roll Star’ may have left his ex bandmate and brother Liam behind, diehard Oasis fans won’t be looking “back in anger” this morning thanks to a decent dose of classics!
