The very first MTV Rail Jam saw the grand staircase at the brand new Quay West Resort & Spa transformed with 400 cubic metres of snow and custom built features, thanks to the whizzes at Burton Snowboards.
Not even sleet, blustery winds and a temporary power outage could stop the boisterous crowd from pulling on their woollies and supporting the boarders who made the seemingly impossible look like a run down a green slope.
They may make it look easy, but Mitch Tomlinson, who was MCing the event, assured us rail jamming is not a gig for the unacquainted.
“It’s a night time Rail Jam so the ideal conditions would be clear skies and no wind, but these guys are professionals and used to performing in all conditions,” said Mitch. “Tonight, it would be perfect if the rain cleared up, but if not, I’m sure the guys will handle it and put on a great show!
“The technicality of the tricks will be the main thing the judges are looking at, also landing the jump, the difficulty factor, and style also. They’ll be looking for the to boarders step up and push themselves.
“I think the local guys will put up a good fight and hold their own against the internationals.”
After a solid hour and a half of stunts, slides and stacks, French Canadian Charles Reid was crowned the winner of MTV Rail Jam 2009. He walked away with $6k cash in his back pocket, as well as a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic with $2000 of Vodafone Prepaid Flexi Cap recharges, Moosehead hair product and Jagermeister Alpine Prize Pack.
The Quebec-born snowboarder said of his win: “I am so stoked to have won. The rain didn’t affect the competition so much, and I was really impressed with the local snowboarders.”
“Probably the tricks that won it for me were the inward backside two seventy over the gap rail front side 360 and 5050 for the kink, and the winnings will go towards my house back in Quebec.”
Congratulations Charles! Big ups also go to local Robbie Walker who scored second prize and $3k in cash.
