MTV’s smash-hit reality show ‘16 and Pregnant’ is a documentary-style series focusing on the controversial subject of teen pregnancy. Each episode follows a five to seven month period in the life of a teenager as they navigate their way through the stormy waters of impending parenthood.
Earlier this month, MTV put a call out to young Australian Mum’s who had found themselves pregnant at 16 and wanted to share their story. After receiving a tonne of great submissions we narrowed it down to five young women, each with a unique and touching personal story.
This week Melanie tells her story: I fell pregnant just before my 17th birthday. I had left school and was living from house to house. Falling pregnant turned my life around, I re-enrolled in school and moved in with the baby’s father. But things took a horrible turn when the he became violent and a close relative passed away. I now have 2 daughters and I hope my story helps other young mums who might be going through what I did.
Over the next few weeks you’ll also meet (NSW), Brooke (TAS), Jordan (QLD), Kellie (SA) and Jasmine (VIC) – each have experienced the insurmountable highs and lows of being unexpectant teenage parents.
