Pearl Jam, who are currently half-way through their sold-out country-wide tour, have admitted that Aussie music, namely AC/DC and The Angels have been a huge influence on their sound.

In fact, the legendary rockers like nothing better than adding a local flavour to gigs by belting out some iconic pub anthem covers; including Hunters and Collectors’ ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’, which they performed to breathless fans in Perth last Saturday (November 14).

"We have a ridiculous amount of material," said guitarist Mike McCready. "Eddie [Vedder] will look over every single set-list we have ever played in Perth or Sydney and we'll throw out ideas as to what this particular moment, this show means to us.

"I would do The Angels myself. Of course I love AC/DC but I grew up on No Exit and Night Attack and covering No Secrets, but I don't think Eddie knows The Angels," McCready says.

Talking to the Daily Telegraph, Mike also said that Australian music has had a huge influence on their string of chart-topping hits.

"That is the Australian music that meant so much to me, maybe because me and my friends were the only ones who knew them. But I definitely don't give Angus [Young] enough credit for influencing my playing."

The band have already indicated they won’t be touring at all next year, which means Australia are only a handful of countries that will get to see them play live this time around. So why do the boys love Oz so much? It could be the huge numbers of devoted fans they’ve amassed since the release of their seminal debut album ‘Ten’ in 1991. Or perhaps our glassy, world famous surf - McCready came to Australia almost two weeks before their Perth gig to catch some waves on the Gold Coast.

"I was out trying to catch some waves when we got to Perth but it was pretty gnarly," he says. "Not for the young locals though, they have no fear."

Pearl Jam continue their sold-out Australian tour until November 25, before heading to New Zealand.
