TUNE-IN TO MTV CLASSIC ON CHANNEL 810, MAY 1 @ 5PM (AEST) FOR 'MTV CLASSIC: THE LAUNCH'.

At 'MTV Classic: The Launch', we caught up with a very philosophical Angry Anderson to talk the new breed of rock and roll, his new album the good old days.

MTV Classic: You’ve talked about the bond of rock 'n' roll, and you’ve mentioned it doesn’t exist as much as it did…

ANGRY:
When you think about it, and if you’ve read enough history you’ll know that change is inevitable and it’s part of life. It’s the most constant thing in the whole cosmos. I’m glad that we, the collective brotherhood and sisterhood [of old school rock] are part of a dying breed, and it’s a very romantic notion to be part of the end of an era. The rock animal, the romantic way that we look at rock and roll, is passing on.

The bands that have been huge in the last 10 years are on that cusp too, they’ve got a foot in both camps. I shudder when they say the biggest rock act in the world is Coldplay. It’s pop.

Kids want different things, and rock 'n' roll has always been about kids. It’s when they’re heart beats the loudest.

MTV Classic: There has been quite a lot of discussion lately about illegally downloading music. What are your thoughts on it?

ANGRY:
I don’t moralise about too much in life and if I do, it’s a very private affair. I’ve learnt philosophically to accept what life is and what it produces. In a really broad philosophic view, you can’t change it anyway. Can we change it? No. Was there a moment when we had a decision? No. It just is. So now we’ve got to deal with it.

It’s not a good thing for people who have so far had to earn their living from selling their music, but don’t think it gets down to good or bad. It’s sad that the change is so painful, but change always is. And I don’t know if there’s a morality attached to it, people take a harsh, passionate stand, and I understand why they do. I just don’t think all the rallying against it is going to do a damn thing.

MTV Classic: What’s your favourite era of music?

ANGRY:
As you go through your life, you appreciate the same thing differently. I’d have to say that my earliest influences on music was swing, and that would have to loom large as my favourite period. The most exciting and the most meaningful era that made my heart faster was the late 50s through to the late 60s.

There was staggeringly great music made before then, but talking about me and my life, it would have to be that era.

To be a teenager when the Beatles first came out was like nothing on earth. The first time I heard the opening notes of ‘Hey Jo’ I thought, take me now God! I wouldn’t of missed it for quids, I’m so glad to have lived through that.

MTV Classic: If you could delve into any other genre, what would it be?

ANGRY:
Well I’m just about to! At the moment I’m working on album of a journey through my life in song. There’s probably about 50 or 60 great songs that have influenced me throughout my life, so it’s my journey musically.

Starting off in the early 50s with Frankie Lane and those country and western singers, and coming forward from there. I love Neil Diamond which spins people out, and Burt Bacharach too and I love them for the song writing skills. There’s a whole collection of songs that would associate with my and my supposed tastes, because the sort of music that I’ve done with Rose Tattoo isn’t what I listen to at home.

MTV Classic: If people could walk away from your shows thinking one thing, what would it be?

ANGRY:
Shit! I’ll come back see that again! [laughs] As some people have paid the great complement and said, I just knew after that night I’d never be the same again.

And I think that the greatest compliment you can pay, that you’ve so touched or moved someone. And the thing we’ve prided ourselves on is that we’ve never bluffed a moment, we’ve never fudged a moment, we’ve never faked a moment. I can say that every moment I’ve been on stage, it’s been 100% and I’m very proud of that.
