Eskimo Joe are back touring Australia for Big Day Out, after releasing their fourth studio album 'Inshalla' in May last year. The rockers tell MTV all about being snubbed by Lily Allen, almost missing their latest gig, and their resolutions for 2010.
MTV: You’re back touring Oz for Big Day Out. How’s it going so far?
Kav: It’s really good fun. Ridiculously good fun. It’s got a lot of good vibes. Everyone’s chilled out and having a good time backstage.
MTV: Any misbehaving?
Joel: Well there’s always one trouble maker, and this year it’s Phil Jamieson from ‘Grinspoon.’ I’m happy to dob him in. He’s the kid at school that takes the p**s out of everyone but you’ve gotta love him anyway. He adds a lot of life to the tour. He entertains the crowd during the gig and the bands at the after-party. He’s earning his keep.
MTV: One act who’s always in the tabloids for being naughty is Lily Allen. Has she led you guys astray yet?
Joel: Well actually we did a festival in Germany and Lily was holding court backstage with everyone. Kav had a beer with her and they were playing a game where they would write a description of someone on a piece of sticky tape and shed go up to them and say ‘hey how’s it going,’ and stick it on them.
MTV: Kav Yeah but when she saw me the other day she didn’t look at me with any recognition in her eyes. She just looked at me blankly, so it’s all over.
Stuart: It clearly meant a lot more to you than it did to her.
Kav: – No, it didn’t actually mean that much to me either.
MTV: I heard a rumour Joel that you almost didn’t make the tour at all…
Joel: Yep. I actually got a call from these guys checking in at the airport in Perth and that woke me up, and the heart started. I sped up the freeway, I actually got pretty much there, but then realised I didn’t have my passport. But the good people of Quantas re-routed me and in the end it turned out better. I flew at a later time, and got upgraded to business class!
MTV: So have you come up with any resolutions for 2010. Better time keeping, perhaps?
Stuart: Nope, I don’t make promises to myself as I know I’m not going to keep them.
Kav: My New Years resolution each year has been bitches and weed, but this year I’ve decided to change it to be a good husband and father.
Joel: To lose less sunglasses. Lose less stuff actually. I was actually thinking I should probably get a sunglasses sponsorship so I can call up and ask for as many as we want.
