But that’s exactly the conditions that rapper Phrase, Jade MacRae and Illy braved when they performed at MTV Snow Jam 2009 in Falls Creek, Victoria last week. But the trio weren’t going to let a little thing like extreme weather get in the way: while Phrase and co. amped the rugged-up crowd to dance themselves steaming, no one in ear shot could deny that Aussie Hip Hop is doing some exciting things.
Now the hangovers have cleared and the icicles has melted, Phrase catches up with MTV post Snow Jam to talk crazy crowds, keeping warm, and what’s coming up.
MTV: So you mentioned you’ve played a few gigs in the snow before, so how did your overall Snow Jam experience rate?
Phrase: It’s the best time I have ever had at the snow full stop. MTV put me and my band up in amazing accommodation and supplied us with a fair bit of booze to keep us warm through the night. The crowd was amazing and I honestly said to my mates a few days back that it was the first time I have had really good fun in ages. Thanks MTV!
MTV: You’re welcome! You brought your full band on stage as well as your fiancé Jade McRae and Illy. How did they go? Any tricks you used to stay warm on stage?
Phrase: Yeah it was great having the full band there. We haven’t played together for a couple of months so it was great. The band smashed it and Jade and Illy did an amazing job. The one thing we all found hard was catching our breath. It seemed like the air up there was mad thin... Must be the altitude, yeah.
MTV: The crowd was so pumped for your act; see any amusing things in the audience?
Phrase: It was bloody hard for me to see anything because of the weather. It was real misty with rain and snow but I did get off the stage at one point in the show and went into the crowd. They all grabbed hold of me and I feared or my life …[laughs]! Well, not really but they didn’t want to let go of me...the crowd were off the chain!!!! Falls, you should be proud of yourself!!!
MTV: Tell us about what you’ve got planned for the summer?
Phrase: Heaps of touring I am about to start the clockwork album launch tour which you can check out all the details at myspace.com/bigphrase and heaps of festivals as well ,I am playing Homebake and heaps others ,and hopefully some more stuff with MTV, thanks to all the crew that looked after us ,you guys rock..
