While details are still sketchy, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said a crew responded to a call at 8am on Sunday from an LA home belonging to Brittany’s husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack. The paramedics declared Murphy had gone into full cardiac arrest upon their arrival, where they administered CPR.
Brittany was then transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and announced dead on arrival at 10.04am on Sunday after paramedics and doctors could not revive the '8 Mile' actress.
A Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre spokeswoman would not provide a cause of death, or any other information. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office is expected to take Murphy's body into custody later today and begin the autopsy and investigation of her death.
"In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support," a rep for Murphy said. "It is their wish that you respect their privacy," reports FOXNews.
Tributes have already started pouring in for the ‘Faster Kill Pussycat’ singer, who became a house-hold name after starring in hit movies such as 'Clueless', '8 Mile', 'Don't Say a Word' and 'Sin City'.
Ex-boyfriend and 'Just Married' co-star, Ashton Kutcher twittered:
“2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon. See you on the other side kid.”
It’s been reported that Brittany, who has been photographed looking pale and gaunt in the last month, was fired from her last film 'The Caller', after a series of ‘altercations’ on the Puerto Rico-based horror movie set.
