US hip-hop star Wyclef Jean is making the ambitious move from music into politics!
The former Fugees star has confirmed he plans to become the next President of Haiti.
The Grammy-award winning artist, who was born on the Caribbean island, says he felt compelled to make a stand following the horrific earthquake, which struck there in January this year.
He told People, "The suffering of the people of Haiti, the youth of Haiti – which is the majority of the population – can't take another five years of the corruption that's been going on for the past 200 years. This is why I'm running.
"[My platform] has four pillars: education, job creation, instilling security into the culture, and, how do we get our agriculture back?
"Politics is a combat sport, so I expect nothing less than to be attacked everyday. But the focus, should be, ‘how we help get the Haitian people out of this mess.’”
And despite the huge challenges he faces, the 37-year-old singer believes he’s qualified enough to help to make a difference.
He adds, “Automatically, when people first see me they’re going to say, ‘Isn’t that the guy from the Fugees?' But I'm hoping that next they'll say, 'Okay. He knows what he’s talking about.' "
The hitmaker will be the latest in a line of celebrities, including Ronald Reagan, Clint Eastwood and Arnold Schwarzenegger, to swap their showbiz roots for politics.
