It’s been eight years since she won the first ever ‘American Idol’ – and while the music world has seen no end of reality TV show winners come and go since then, Kelly Clarkson has proved she’s not going anywhere.
Making the tricky transition from a manufactured popstar into a true ‘Miss Independent,’ the girl from Texas with the huge voice and even bigger attitude has since gone on to sell 27 million records!
And now the Grammy Award winner is back with her fifth studio record, ‘Stronger,’ which she assures MTV is her “best” yet!
Here Down Under for a promo tour, and to blow the socks off 80,000 NRL fans at the Grand Final this weekend, the sassy songstress spills on her brand new release, Aussie fellas and the ever-changing music biz…

MTV Australia: Welcome back to Oz Kelly! So tell us about your new album ‘Stronger.’
Kelly: It’s all about empowerment and strength. It's actually my best album. We didn't plan on it, but it’s really kind of rhythmic-pop, dance, pop-rock, it’s kind of all over the place, but it’s good!
MTV Australia: You’re performing at the NRL Grand Final on Sunday – are you excited?
Kelly: Yeah. I have no idea who's going to win the NRL and I'm not even going to try and pretend I know much about the teams [but] I performed, I guess it was like 8 years ago, on the NRL right after I won American Idol and yeah I'm happy to be welcomed back. I had fun the first time I did it, just watching all the hot guys play sports, so I'll have fun again!
MTV Australia: You’ve come a long way since ‘American Idol,’ but tell us, looking back, what was it like to win the first ever show?
Kelly: It was kind of like a joke to me at first, like ‘Oh god this is going to be horrible,’ and then it just kind of ended up working out. Everybody got on board, like the audience, I think people liked investing in the artist before they had a career. It was kinda cool, I loved it, I loved the opportunity, any door you can get through to start singing and making records.
MTV Australia: Nowadays so many artists, like Justin Bieber, are being discovered through the Internet – what do you think of that?
Kelly: I think it's just a different industry now, people are getting discovered in so many different ways. It's different from years before, but I think it's normal now. It's how it happens now. And it’s kinda cool because you have more leverage, as the artist, rather than coming up through a label and them telling you every which way to do everything.
Make sure you get your hands on Kelly’s brand new album ‘Stronger’ out October 21!
