This year’s MTV VMAs had it all: tears, cheers, rants and shows of sisterly solidarity.

Janet Jackson kicked-started the bash in dramatic style, performing a routine to ’Scream’ – hers and Michael’s huge 2001 hit – alongside video footage of her late bro and MJ-channelling dancers.

It was goosebump-inducing and tear-jerking in equal measure, but she did MJ proud.

Next it was Madonna’s turn to pay tribute to the late king of pop. Madge talked about how she struck up a friendship with MJ in the ‘90s before “the negativity” kicked in then finished her speech with the words: “Yes, Michael Jackson was a human king, but dammit, he was a king. Long live the king.”

And MJ proved he was pop royalty from beyond the grave with an electrifying look at his last performances in the eagerly awaited documentary movie, ’Michael Jackson: This Is It.’

Twi-hards were also in raptures with a sneak peak of the new, ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’ trailer – however there was no almost-snogging from R-Patz and K-Stew this time.

Of course, an MTV Awards bash wouldn’t be an MTV Awards bash without a Kanye West tantrum and as we reported earlier, he had a tanty with bells on. The rapper didn’t blow a fuse because HE was snubbed in a category – he blew a fuse ‘cos poor old Taylor Swift won Best Female Video over Beyonce.

Our spies tell us Kanye was asked to leave the Radio City Music Hall after his rant. In what might be seen to be a case of “too late now, fella” by some, he has since taken to his blog to apologise to the country poppet for his actions.

Elsewhere, Gaga bled from her ribcage and P!nk hung upside down for an awesome, circus-tastic performance of her hit ’Sober’, while intergalactic rockers Muse wowed with new tune ’Uprising’.

And in what was a touching display of girl power, Queen Beyonce invited Taylor Swift on stage with her as she accepted her Video Of The Year gong.

Taylor then sparked a giggle when she began her delayed thank you speech with the words: “Maybe we can try this again…”

Bringing the show to a fitting finale, Jay-Z hit the stage with glamour puss Alicia Keys to sing their ode to the Big Apple, ’Empire State Of Mind’, from Jay’s new album.

“Now you're in New York/ These streets will make you feel brand new/ The lights will inspire you/ Let's hear it for New York, New York, New York,” sang Keys in the chorus.

Hear, hear!
