Don’t miss the world-wide premiere of Daft Punk’s ‘Derezzed’ on MTV.com.au, Today @ 5pm (AEDT)!
Are you harbouring fond memories of watching and re-watching the epic sci fi adventure ‘Tron’ back in the 80s? Or perhaps you’re not familiar with the franchise that has spawned countless video games, comic books, novels and action figures in the twenty-eight years since its release.
Well brace yourself, because the iconic space adventure is getting a Disney Pictures CGI overhaul that you won’t be able to ignore.
In fact, ‘Tron: Legacy’ is proving to be one of the most-hyped sequels in recent years, and to the delight of electronica fans and fantasy die-hards the world over, Daft Punk are along for the ride.
For their debut Hollywood film soundtrack, the electronica gods were first approached by ‘Tron: Legacy’ director Joseph Kosinski and music supervisor Jason Bentley . But when it came to the arduous task of composing the dramatic score to such a highly-anticipated sequel, the electro-robotic dance royalty didn’t just tear up the rule book, they threw it in the shredder.
So if you’re expecting the signature kick drum-fueled beats from the European knob-twiddlers, think again, because Daft have revealed their surprising inspiration for the soundtrack – the violin – and an 85-piece orchestra!
“The soul and emotion of it is so powerful,” explained band member Thomas Bangalter to Dazed and Confused Magazine. “A Stradivarius … will live for a thousand years.”
“This is what Daft Punk would have done in 1700,” Thomas continued.
“We knew from the start that there was no way we were going to do this [soundtrack] with two synthesisers and a drum machine,” Bangalter said. “A cello was there 400 years ago and will still be here in 400 years. But synthesisers that were invented 20 years ago will probably be gone in the next 20.”
The result is a soaring, brooding and ominous soundtrack, already being touted by critics as “the duo’s best work in years”.
