There’s no lack of games on the market catering to those with a penchant for blowing things up on the battlefield. But as far as groundbreaking levels of destruction and realistic battle damage, 'Battlefield 3' is racing ahead of the competition faster than flying shrapnel.

So what does it take to develop an innovative and revolutionary standard of quality game play in one of the most highly competitive genres around?

We sit down for a chat with Battlefield 3 Creative Director Lars Gustavsson to find out!

MTV: What was your inspiration for Battlefield 3?

Lars: I think it's a combination of the ideas in Battlefield 2 that the fans loved so much and transferring those into the new era, as well adding new ideas. So not letting our old fans down at the same time as seeing how we could make Battlefield better.

MTV: Now that Battlefield 3 is ready for release, has it lived up to your expectations?

Lars: I would say it's more than I expected. It has been a hectic project to say the least, but I think the team has done a great job. We've had design ideas since Battlefield 2 as well as working on our engine over the last three and a half years. But I'd say the last 1 to 2 years is where it has really crystallised.

MTV: How has Battlefield 3 improved from the previous games?

Lars: A big part would be our engine - it really does stick out on the market. We've added a two player co-op campaign as well as 'Battlelog' which will bring players into the Battlefield world.

MTV: There’s a lot of competition in the market including 'Modern Warfare 3'. What sets Battlefield 3 apart?

Lars: I think it's really the range we're offering, and that we don't tell you how to play. We can offer anything from different vehicles to different game modes. We've also implemented the game with old maps, so there is something for everyone - we ship with nine maps and they have all modes implemented on them. In addition to the different modes, we also have a number of modifiers like hardcore mode and infantry only. So I think we have a nice offering.

MTV: What about new vehicles and weapons?

Lars: There are so many... There are over 20 vehicles, you can drive anything from a boat, jeep and fighter as well as having a top-of-the-art shooter experience. There are also plenty of vehicle and weapon upgrades to unlock.

MTV: What made you decide to incorporate a co-op mode?

Lars: I think this is a nice middle ground between the single player campaign and multiplayer. So many people have a hard time going from single player to multiplayer, it's a first step towards gaming online.

MTV: What’s your favourite part of Battlefield 3?

Lars: The highly polished vehicle experience. They have a system that disables vehicles when they get too damaged. Also how you shoot and run, your connection with the Battlefield world is a much more physical experience as well as having more unlockables than ever.

MTV: Will there be more Battlefields?

Lars: I've been making Battlefield games for 12 years, I wouldn't be surprised if we do more in the future. I have draws full of ideas for the future, so who knows.

Battlefield 3 is due out late October 27 on Windows, PS3, Xbox 360.
