Chart-topping hits, slick dance moves and undeniable charm - with skills like this it’s no surprise Usher’s sold over 45 million albums worldwide.
With a career spanning nearly two decades, the five-time Grammy Award winner shows no sign of slowing down, and is back with his sixth studio album ‘Raymond V Raymond.’
His catchy new single ‘OMG,’ which features Will.i.am, has reached #1 in Oz, as well as across the globe.
MTV caught up with the R&B superstar during his promo tour Down Under to talk Bieber fever, working with Empire Of The Sun, and his mentor Michael Jackson.
MTV: Usher, for those who haven’t heard it yet, what can fans expect from your new album?
Usher: Raymond v Raymond is kind of me versus me. There’s the one side that you do know and then the other that has grown into a place of comfort as a man. A man who can be honest about certain things, learn and live through incredible moments. That’s what the album is ultimately about.
MTV: Your new single ‘OMG’ hit #1 here in Oz. Are you planning to do a full tour here anytime soon?
Usher: Yes, I’ll be back to tour next year. It’s a great market for me. I’m going to continue to come back here as long as you guys want to see me.
MTV: You’ve collaborated with huge artists including P Diddy and Will.i.am. Who else would you like work with?
Usher: There are so many artists who are incredible out there. I love, believe it or not, the Aussie group Empire Of The Sun. I think they are really dope. To do something outside of the norm would be interesting for me. To do something with Santogold or M.I.A, to do something that’s off the beat and path of what people would expect.
MTV: You’re mentoring teen sensation Justin Bieber. He’s obviously learnt a lot form you, but what have you learnt from him?
Usher: Well that social media really does keep you connected in a very relevant way. You know I found him from seeing him on YouTube. Record distribution has just changed. How you find an artist, how you hone talent, all of that has changed.
MTV: Will you be mentoring more upcoming artists?
Usher: There are other artists I’m interested in. It took me 31 years to find this one [Bieber], so it may take a little bit more time to find those other artists. I think I’m in a good zone right now in terms of developing.
MTV: You’ve said before Michael Jackson was a mentor, and a friend to you. What was the best piece of advice he ever gave you?
Usher: The one piece of advice that Michael gave to me is that you should always be conscious of history, as opposed to just thinking about making it through a moment. Be conscious of history because you’re making history every time you do something.
