She’s been tipped as one of the new rising artists to watch out for this year - and after bagging New Zealand born songstress Zowie for ‘MTV Live Sessions’ -
we can certainly see why!
The pretty pixie-like electro popstar with the HUGE voice and unique sense of vintage style, has already scooped an international fan base thanks to the success of her debut singles ‘Broken Machine’ and ‘Bite Back.’
And with the release of her first album just around the corner – her loyal followers, just like us here at MTV, are desperate to hear more.
We caught up with the super sassy brunette in Oz following her set for ‘MTV Live Sessions’ to talk touring Down Under, her idol Michael Jackson and working with Marilyn Manson...

MTV: Welcome to Oz Zowie! So we hear your debut album is almost ready…
Zowie: Yeah, we’re hoping for mid year, it’s getting there. It’s just kind of at the stage where I’m getting mixes back, so it’s very close!
MTV: And for those dying to hear it - what can fans expect?
Zowie: Genre wise, ‘Bite Back’ is the first single from it, so there’s a lot of that kind of moody, heavy kind of stuff, and then there’s bursts of punk and then Japanese pop. I’m really proud of it, so I hope people like it.
MTV: You’ve been tipped as one to watch this year – coming from New Zealand how does it feel to be creating such a big buzz internationally?
Zowie: It feels really cool being from a really small place and getting recognized, but we feel ready to get into that, so it's exciting.
MTV: You toured America recently - what was the best bit of your trip?
Zowie: I had a moment where I got to meet my favourite drummer, Samantha Maloney, and that was, I think, one of the only points in my whole life where I’ve just wanted to just faint and sit down. That was a really cool moment.
MTV: You’ve got a pretty unique sense of style – who’s your fashion icon?
Zowie: People who I’ve really admired since I was really small are people like Michael Jackson, Prince and Grace Jones. Really kind of left-field people, those who, when they came out, people were just like ‘OMG what are they wearing? They’re insane!’ Those kinds of artists really inspire me.
MTV: You mentioned Michael Jackson, would you say he inspires you on stage too?
Zowie: Definitely that kind of pop element. In a sense I think that’s the kind of pop that I really aspire to. And I think maybe some onstage persona - the cheekiness, 'cause he was always super cheeky on stage, and we always bring that into our live set.
MTV: You’ve just completed an Aussie tour supporting Mark Ronson – how was the crowd reaction?
Zowie: The reaction was really good. There were lots of crazy dancers and some people were even yelling my name!
MTV: Which artists would you love to work with in the future?
Zowie: I’d love to work with this group called The Knux… I really like them, and Grace Jones has always been someone I’ve wanted to work with, but I might just freak out! And I’d love to work with someone a bit more left field like Marilyn Manson.
MTV: And lastly, what else have you got coming up?
Zowie: After South by South West and a show in LA, it’s back to New Zealand for probably just a few weeks of rehearsing, and then back to Australia to do a bunch of shows - and then album dropping time!
