When David Bowie’s hit ‘Space Oddity’ crashed the charts in 1969, it went on to become his biggest hit and influence a whole generation of fans. Now, if illustrator Andrew Kolb gets his way, Bowie’s milestone track about Major Tom wandering into space is going to inspire a whole new generation!
According to musicfeeds.com, the Canadian illustrator has used the lyrics of David’s 1969 classic ‘Space Oddity’ as the basis of an illustrated children’s book.
The book, which can be downloaded in PDF form on Kolb’s website, tells the somewhat scary story of astronaut Major Tom, who shoots off into space and wins the respect of reporters on earth. But, during one of his space walks, things go horribly wrong when his craft suffers irreparable damage. Trapped in space, he has time to send just one final message to his wife…
Kolb said:
“Have you ever listened to a song and your mind’s eye is immediately filled with visuals? David Bowie’s classic space epic is one such song for me. Every lyric paints such a vivid picture that I figured “Oh hey, I guess I’ll make that into a children’s book!”
In another interview, he told the independent.co.uk:
"It was an entirely personal project," he said. "It was for entirely selfish reasons."
No word on what David thinks of the book, but Kolb is already in talks with HarperCollins for a print run.
