It was ladies night at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, with Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Taylor grabbing the gramophones.

She may have lost out to Kings Of Leon for the coveted Record of the Year category, but Beyonce, who was one of the early performers of the evening accompanied by a horde of men in riot gear, was the undisputed queen of the night with a record-breaking swag of six Grammys including the Song of the Year and Best R&B Song, both for ‘Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)’.

"This has been such an amazing night for me," B said while accepting her Best Female Pop award. "I'd like to thank my family, including my husband. I love you."

While her futuristic glittery leotard may be considered outrageous compared to other starlets, Lady Gaga played it relatively conservative for her Grammy performance with no blood, body parts or severed Kermit heads in sight.

Her performance with Elton John was the most eagerly anticipated of the night – and while smearing themselves with ash was as risqué as it got for the pair, there was little doubt that the 23-year-old songstress and the 62-year-old pop legend (who hasn’t appeared at the Grammys since he jammed with Eminem) blew it out of the water with a mash-up of her 'Speechless' and his 'Your Song.'

Meanwhile, cutie Taylor Swift turned the Grammy’s into the Glammies with a series of show-stopping, floor length gowns. Her outfits weren’t the only thing making jaws drop – the country ‘it girl’ performed a glorious mash-up with Stevie Nicks and also managed to walk away with four golden gramophones including Best Country album for her five-times platinum album ‘Fearless’.

"When we're 80 years old and we're telling the same stories over and over to our grandkids and they're so annoyed with us, this is the story we're going to be telling over and over again," she said. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

Black-Eyed Peas, who scored three Grammys including one for the futuristic vid ‘Boom Boom Pow,’ brought down the house with a performance of their latest hit, ‘I'mma Be,’ and I Gotta Feeling’ flaked by a dozen robot men, while Jaimie Fox was joined by T-Pain, Doug E. Fresh, and ex-Guns N Roses guitarist Slash for an on-stage mash-up.

A 3D performance of ‘Earth Song’ by Celine Deion, Usher, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson kicked off the tribute to the late great Michael Jackson, while his children, Paris and Prince Jackson, accepted a lifetime achievement award on behalf of the King of Pop.

Prince told how his father’s message was one of hope and love, while Paris said, "Daddy was going to perform this year...Thank you we love you, Daddy."
