Last night, (September 2) scores of fans and media descended on Sydney’s Cargo Bar for an exclusive world-first listen of one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year – Good Charlotte’s ‘Cardiology’!

The invite only crowd were treated to a sample of tracks from their fifth album, which signals a return to what made us love tattooed-twins Benji and Joel Madden in the first place – rock-heavy riffs, pseudo-pop anthems, punk-worthy hooks and songs you can learn the words too.

‘Cardiology’, which drops on November 2 , upholds a nod to the dance-worthy direction on 2007’s ‘Good Morning Revival’, and while simultaneously harks back to punk-roots on their earlier releases, many of the tracks on the album show a solid sound progression for the American-based rockers.

And by all accounts, fans are liking what they hear. The album’s first taster, party single ‘Like It's Her Birthday’, has already notched up the 240, 000 hits on youtube, and is experiencing a welcome reception on iTunes Australia, currently charting at number nine. So when was the last time the brothers partied like it was their birthday?

“That would be last night. Can’t say we got a lot of sleep.” laughs Benji, “Man you guys know how to party!”

But after the slog of recording the album, which they actually did twice after scrapping the first lot of songs and starting again with a new producer, partying and celebration is well deserved. Talking about their decision to start the album from scratch, Joel said:

“It was kind of daunting knowing that we’d have to start again, but it was a case of the wrong producer for the wrong situation. We’d already put so much into the record but we just thought, it’s not right, something’s not happening.”

“So it was almost a relief to start with a clean slate again,”
said Benji. “Because it didn’t feel right releasing something that we weren’t happy with”.

“But it was the right decision,” finished Joel. “I finally got to listen to the final mastered copy of it a couple of days ago, and I am happier with this than anything else we’ve done. I can say in all honesty it’s our best record yet.”

So any chance we’ll see those scrapped songs released any time soon?

“You know, we have hundreds of songs that we’ve recorded that have never made it to release, so we’re not sure yet what to do with those tracks. Maybe it’s something we could do in the future.”

“Yeah maybe release like a b-sides album or something like that, it would be good to do something with them eventually, there’s so much material there,” Benjii added.

When asked about their decision to premiere the album Down Under, the self-confessed Aussie-lovers, who refer to the country as a “second home” told MTV that Aussie fans were among the first to embrace the rocker’s sound when they were first propelled into superstardom ten years ago. Since then, their love affair with Australia has been ongoing, and Aussie fans are more than happy to return the love!

“Man, every time we come here we get asked when we’re going to become citizens, and we’d just like to know how we go about doing that,” said Joel. “We love everything about Australia; we’d be so happy just to move here and stay here forever and just release music. We’d be helping the economy because we’d be buying houses, and recording and stuff… Reckon you could do something about that?”

We’ll certainly try boys!

And if having our favourite punk-rockers permanent resident’s wasn’t enough to get fans frothing, here’s some news that will get you really excited: next year will see the boys performing a full-blown country wide tour!

"Yeah there is a tour in the works right now. What we’re putting together is going to be huge. We wanna come back and do it right and hit every single city, probably early next year" says Benji.

Can’t wait guys!

Keep your ears peeled for Good Charlotte’s new album ‘Cardiology’, out November 2.
