On 12th September 2009, MTV EXIT held a unique concert in Nepal by the foothills of the Himalayas in a small town called Pokhara.

Aussie song-bird Kate Miller-Heidke, who is currently causing waves locally and internationally with her tuneful tales, traveled over 8,000 kilometers to headline the concert and played to a crowd of 15,000 people on the banks of the stunning Fewa Lake. As part of the part of the MTV EXIT Live in Nepal Concert Series, the gig aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of human trafficking, the second largest illegal trade in the world after drugs.

The UN estimates there are 2.5 million trafficking victims in the world at any one time. More than half are from the Asia Pacific, and it’s estimated that criminals earn more than US$10 billion each year through modern day slavery.

Now, MTV Exit (End Exploitation and Trafficking) has announced the release of Rise: A Tough Ascent, a half-hour film based on Kate Miller-Heidke’s journey to raise awareness and increase prevention of this illicit industry.

Featuring live performances and interviews from the platinum selling artist, the socially explicit film provides a hard-hitting look at the issue of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

“I hope a lot of young people, especially women, will see this show and learn that anyone can be a victim of trafficking.” Miller-Heidke said. “We have to protect ourselves and each other from this horrible form of modern-day slavery.”

Rise: A Tough Ascent will air on MTV Australia on 9th November at 11:30 pm.
