Now, more than 20 years after his untimely death, Freddie Mercury, with his captivating live performances, powerful four octave vocal range and endearing persona is still topping polls as one of the greatest male singers of all time, while Queen still rank among the world’s best selling bands.
Interestingly enough, according to news.com.au most of Queen’s sales have come in the 20 years since Freddie passed away, with the Independent on Sunday newspaper commenting that Freddie’s death was “a mere hiccup in his career.”
"Even though physically he is not here, his presence seems more potent than ever," Brian May wrote in a blog marking Freddie’s 65th birthday in September.
"He will always epitomise the perfect front man - the consummate channel of communication between a band and an audience.
"He devoured life. He celebrated every minute. And, like a great comet, he left a luminous trail which will sparkle for many a generation to come.”
Meanwhile, the British rockers, who are marking their 40th anniversary this year, remain popular as ever – launching the ‘We Will Rock You’ musical in 2002, and going back on the road in 2005 – introducing their classics to a whole new generation.
And fans can expect to see even more of Queen in the coming years – a film about Freddie, starring Sacha Baron Cohen is currently in production.
The Queen frontman confirmed via statement on November 23, 1991 that he had contracted AIDS – within 24 hours he had fallen into a coma and passed away.
