In one of the most powerful alliances of the century Metallica’s collaboration with king of rock Lou Reed has brought the tough metal band to tears – literally!
According to NME, the metallers broke down while recording their upcoming album ‘Lulu’ with the American musician.
Working on one of the songs from the album called ‘Junior Dad’ the lyrics were said to have caused such a stir that some of the group had to actually leave the studio!
Metallica’s Kirk Hammett told The Pulse Of Radio,
"I had to run out of the control room, and I found myself standing in the kitchen, sobbing away.”
Hammett wasn’t the only one who got choked up, as guitarist James Hetfield felt the words get to him too.
“James came into the kitchen in the same condition - he was sobbing, too. It was insane. Lou managed to take out both guitar players in Metallica in one fell swoop, with his amazing poetic lyrics," Hammett added. The tear jerking line was "say hello to Junior Dad, the greatest disappointment – age withered and changed him.”
Hetfield’s father abandoned him when he was just 13 – an experience he’s spoken at length about in a documentary ‘Absent.’
The idea for the two giants of modern music to work together came after the 25th anniversary of ‘Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame’ concerts in 2009. The group played with Reed on some of his classic hits ‘Sweet Jane’ and ‘White Light/ White Heat.’
After the triumphant success Reed suggested they make a record together.
"I knew it was a dream come true. This is the best thing I ever did. And I did it with the best group I could possibly find," Reed told Rolling Stone.
The collaborative album will be released on October 31 and is based on Reed's reworking of a musical he'd written which was inspired by German playwright Frank Wedekind's material from the early 1900s.
