The 36-year-old’s body was found by a friend who had gone to check up on him after he hadn’t heard from him in a few days.
Police called to the scene reportedly found prescription drug bottles, half a bag of cocaine and a crack pipe in his apartment. No foul play is suspected.
The devastating news comes less than a year after the music maestro - real name, Adam Goldstein - survived an horrific plane crash in South Carolina.
The DJ was on the Lear Jet in with his mate, Blink 182 drummer, Travis Barker, when it crashed during take off. Both escaped with burns while four of their friends on board were killed.
DJ AM had high-profile romances with Nicole Richie - who he was engaged to - and actress Mandy Moore, but is said to have been devastated recently over a breakup with his model girlfriend, Hayley Wood.
A source told US celebrity site, TMZ.com: “She ended it, and he didn't want it to end. The breakup hurt him. He hadn't been in a good place lately. For the past week, he wasn't really around, he was keeping to himself, and he was blowing people off."
Sources believe the split may have resulted in Goldstein, who had famously not touched drugs or alcohol in almost a decade, to return to his vices.
However, another friend - DJ Scotty Boy - countered: "I can't believe the drug stories. AM didn't even touch alcohol. He wasn't a party guy. It's hard to believe.”
The popular mixer’s celeb friends are in mourning. Travis Barker Tweeted: “My brother is gone. I love u and miss u, I'll never forget all the good times we had.”
Meanwhile, Mandy Moore released a statement saying: "I am absolutely heartbroken. For those of us lucky enough to have known him, Adam radiated a contagious exuberance for life and also personified the very definition of a true friend. To say that he will be missed beyond words is an understatement. My heart goes out to his loved ones."
In a sad twist of events, the DJ was set to star in a new MTV reality show called ’Gone Too Far’, helping teens break their drug addictions and talking about his own substance abuse battles.
