Double ARIA winner Ladyhawke has admitted she finds it hard getting her head around being in the same poptastic basket as Britney Spears.
Speaking after Thursday’s ARIAs bash (Nov 26), the Kiwi cutie said: “Being considered in the same category as the likes of her, it’s cool ‘cos I never thought of myself as a pop star. I’ve always been a musician.
“So I love it that young girls might like my music and see me as a pop star because I’ve spent years being in crappy bands. As for young girls thinking I’m the new Britney – they’ll learn!”
The ’My Delirium’ singer, who has Asperger's syndrome- a form of autism characterised by difficulties dealing with people and social situations - also said she struggled with shyness when she started out as a solo star.
She told us: “It was hard because it meant I had to put myself out there. I was used to being a guitarist or a drummer and always being in the background. Being a front woman is full of ups and downs."
She added, with a giggle: “I’ve learnt a lot – like how to talk properly and not trip over my own tongue.”
Now she’s beginning to think about the follow-up to her hugely successful self-titled debut album.
She revealed: “I’ve been messing around with ideas. As soon as ’Big Day Out’ tour is finished I’ll get cracking on the record. I’m just dying to start.
“I’m going to explore where I began with drums and marching beats. It’s loose at the moment but I want to get more guitars in there, too.”
