It’s a story so familiar it’s almost become a formula – band makes it big, flogs millions of albums, sells out stadiums, then the charismatic singer embarks on a solo career…
But Chris Martin is one front-man who won’t be jumping on the solo bandwagon anytime soon, after admitting that he’d be “terrible” without his Coldplay bandmates, reports the telegraph.co.uk.
The 34-year-old singer songwriter, who has previously written solo material, told Q Magazine that if he tried to go it alone, he’d probably end up singing on street corners for his supper!
The hitmaker said: "I'd just be terrible. I don't think I could even get a gig in Butlins - and I've been to Butlins. I think me and my keyboard would be outside Woolworths most days, getting shouted at."
And despite rumours flying thick and fast that the ‘Clocks’ singer was about to launch a solo career, after recently topping the charts with Coldplay's fifth album ‘Mylo Xyloto’, Chris has insisted he’d never split with his bandmates, adding:
"They're very good friends to me because they know that, as the singer, and especially because I'm married to Gwyneth Paltrow, I get eight times as much media as them.
"They know how much I need them, I just couldn't do it on my own."
Meanwhile, Chris and his wife Gwyneth, who are good friends with Jay-Z and his superstar wifey Beyonce, has also said how he thinks it’s bizzare that the hip hop heavyweight is a fan of his music!
"When Jay first said, 'I like your band' I was, like, 'What the f*** are you talking about? No, you don't!' Then I realised he doesn't bring any baggage. 'I like your songs.' It was as simple as that" he said.
He also admitted that their unlikely friendship is "hilarious", adding, "What's the common denominator? Well, underneath he probably feels a bit like me and I feel a bit like him."
But Chris’ wife Gwyneth knows why the two click. "They balance each other out,” she said. “Chris and I are like Jay and Beyonce: two paranoid ironists and two calm, grounded people," she said.
