Fresh out of high school, the three spunky lads from NSW Central Coast brought their pre-teen punk melodica to the backstage scenes of the awards, blowing minds with their catchy sound.
Short Stack brings the tall talent and the skinny jeans, complete with scruffy locks and a sound that would challenge Kisschasey for their fan base.
The three boys file in, lunch in hand and eyes on the prize. They’re friendly, polite and once behind the mic, fill the room with relaxed acoustic solace.
Short Stack kick off the sit-down set with their hit Princess Shaun Divine’s vocals consuming the entire room.
Divine’s over-pronunciation creates the teen anthem and fortifies the lyrics “princess, why you so contagious?” You can’t help but tap your feet and of course, the act is not complete without the hair tussling and “bah bah badahas”.
When Princess draws to a close, you find yourself repeating the lyrics over and over and the music has only been gone 20 seconds, so it’s no wonder this track has been youtube and radio gold!
The good looking Budgewoi boys then treat us to an impromptu cover of Australia’s very own Miss Kylie Minogue’s smash hit Can't Get You Out Of My Head. Divine goes on the record to say,
“The reason we chose this song is because we’re comfortable with our sexuality,” Divine explains with a wry smirk. One might draw comparisons from this comment to the online flack the tight-legginged singer has received from online forums in regards to his sexuality!
Sexual orientation aside, the boys keep the arrangement virtually the same; but the real surprise is how the angsty vocals reinvent the song, flooding the room with shrieking cries of ‘can’t get you out of my head’. The lads make the song their own and somehow manage to make Kylie Minogue palatable for emo listeners in an unlikely yet justifiable cover.
Short Stack show their true colours towards the end of the song, Divine’s screams “just to be there in your arms” over and over and the sit down session almost goes through the roof.
It’s no doubt these styled teens have garnered great buzz, their performance though intimate yet intense transcended a definite talent and MTV were only too lucky to have them.
