Last month, Red Cross and MTV teamed up with the goal to help spread an important message for Save-A-Mate campaign – look after your party pals, and know what to do in an emergency.

MTV staff put their heads together to come up with some great TVC concepts – and Red Cross were so blown away, they selected not one but two winning ideas.

The concepts for both campaigns were created by MTV Staff and written, produced and directed by members of MTV’s creative team, with acting roles were also undertaken by MTV Staff and friends.

The second campaign tells the story of Marcus, who is at a party drinking with his mates when he takes a pill offered by a friend. At first Marcus’ friends find it pretty funny when he passes out, and get busy drawing on his face, but the mood soon takes a different turn when Marcus begins to deteriorate...

MTV talks to the star of the ad Marcus Brown, whose band Golden Fangs also provided the track for the ad, called ‘Limb Limb’.

MTV: So how did you score the part on the Red Cross ad?

MB: I used to live with the director of the ad, Yvette Paxinos. First of all I was offered a role in the ad, and they needed more male extras so I got a couple of guys from the band down, then they decided that they’d like to use the track ‘Limb Limb’ over it…

MTV: So what’s the song about?

MB: To me it’s about opening up another identity when you step out and do you thing at your night, like the day time and night time personas. It’s like a morning track, when you’ve been out all night, you’re walking home and you’re reflecting …

MTV: What did you think of the message?

MB: I think it’s really good, because it doesn’t shy away from the fact that people do experiment. That’s part of life for a lot of people. There are some people that abstain, but I think that would happen with or without a campaign. So I think it’s a little more effective than the ‘just say no’ campaigns that you see…
It’s a good message for people in their teens regardless of what they’re experimenting with. You hear of stories about people who are worried about the repercussions of being arrested or whatever, because they’re with someone who’s got into some sort of trouble, so it’s a really relevant message that could save someone’s life.

It’s a good reminder to look out for each other… watch out for one another.

MTV: You play someone who passes out in the add, but is really overdosing. Could you relate to any experiences?

MB: Yeah – I think it’s easy when you see someone topple over to have a laugh about it, but its good awareness to go and check! And that’s the theme of the add, everyone’s having a laugh when my character passes out, not realizing that he’s ODing…
We all go out and party and have a good time, but as long as there’s someone on point looking out for everyone else in the group, that the main thing. There’s nothing wrong with partying hard. I’m lucky to have the friends I do because we all look after each other and that’s important.

MTV: Tell us about your band Golden Fangs.

MB: We’ve been together for about two years. Sam and Luke are audio geeks, so we’re a completely DIY type of operation which is good ‘cause you can do so much stuff by yourself. Surf guitar mixed with sample pop… The song is king, the tune is king,
