And although we were secretly hoping otherwise, it appears that the rumour was complete cod-wallop, with Justin's camp unceremoniously shutting down whispers without delay by insisting he "is not scheduled to be in the recording studio with Britney".
According to record industry insiders, JT was set to lend Britters his expertise on her last album 'Blackout', but due to Brit being in the middle of sanity-failure 'n all, she was a no show at the studio and the plans were shelved.
But if you believe the glossy's, it seems Brit Brit is getting her shit together of late, refraining from head shaving, umbrella attacking and the like, so it was only natural rumours of a collaboration were going to re-surface. But alas, with one fell swoop from Justin's reps, our hopes of seeing another another head-to-toe matching denim and diamante ensemble ala the 2001 American Music Awards have been dashed once and for all.
The pop stars have not sung together publicly since they shared a stage with Aerosmith, Nelly and Mary J. Blige at the 2001 Superbowl, during Justin's N*Sync days.
We have much love for Brit Brit and are all rooting for the next album to build her back up to the heady heights of pop she was once accustomed, but it won't be with Justin.
According to MTV.com, Brit burnt that bridge with her infamous VMA performance cock-up.
Super producer Timbaland stated in an interview with MTV.com in September of last year that a prospective team up between her and JT would be be "the best thing that ever happened" and would "help her out a whole lot." But he then dismissed the possibility, saying "It'll never happen. Nah. It could've, but it won't."
Timbaland previously said he got close to working with the singer, telling Entertainment Weekly in March 2007, "I just want to take her away, go overseas and work [it] out. ... I asked Justin, 'How would you feel about me working with Britney?' ... 'Would you do it with me?' " Timbaland told the magazine that JT was willing to get involved at the time. "She's just gotta be serious."
Timbaland went on to say that the only chance Brit had to rectify the situation and possibly work with the hit making duo again was to apologise.
"She should humble herself and make a phone call and say, 'I'm sorry.' She knows what she's sorry about," Tim said. "She needs to say, 'I was wrong,' and it'll definitely move forward. ... That's all she has to say."
So we're guessing she never made that phone call then.
Shame, but we're guessing Jessica Biel is stoked. Don't worry Brit Brit, we'll buy your latest album, even if JT aint on it! Go Team Britney!
