Silverchair singer Daniel Johns used his latest Big Day Out performance in Melbourne to set the record "straight" about his sexuality, taking the opportunity of having a massive rocking audience to tell them he wasn't "f#$king gay", and then both giving them the finger and wearing a garter to prove it.
While the finger could be a symbol of Daniel's latent heterosexuality (who ever questions the sexuality of a truckie, a brickie, or a finger-giver?), the garter, in converse, could be viewed as a symbolic peace offering to the gay community, who otherwise might have felt put out by Daniel's need to make such a statement at all. After all, Mika, Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron have never felt the need to clarify.
But perhaps Daniel, in the aftermath of his split with Natalie Imbruglia, has felt a need to boost his confidence and please people of all ilk. His recent announcement would impress all the blokey heterosexuals, who are known to need something like that to be asserted on a regular basis, while providing the homosexual community with a flash of leg and hint of a different reality altogether.
Still more likely, in all this, Daniel was just pleasing himself. And that would make him neither hetero nor homosexual, but merely masturbatory.
And in front of a crowd of 45,000 ! Now that's a man.
