Emerging from a thick mist of smoke and dim shadowy lights at the Enmore Theatre on Sunday night, The Dandy Warhols proved more than 16 years after they first gave fans "music to drink to" they can still make being cool look effortless.
Arriving fashionably late on stage, the band eased into the set with 'Mohammed' followed by 'Solid,' but it was fan favourites 'We Used To Be Friends' that really got the crowd engaged, and 'Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth' seemed to make the audience remember how to move their limbs.
After 'Holding Me Up' the Dandys obliged a screaming fan’s request and agreed to play 'Cool As Kim Deal.' And don't think a nearly two decades has had any impact on their stoner rock lifestyle, with front man Courtney Taylor-Taylor declaring "I love the smell of marijuana" to introduce '(Tony, This Song Is Called) Lou Weed.'
The audience were treated with a few surprises on the night, including a sneak peek of two new unreleased songs. 'Rest Your Head' shows a softer, slower side to the band, while 'The Wow Signal' is an upbeat and catchy sure-fire hit...if Taylor-Taylor can remember the lyrics. "I forgot some of the words," he admitted at the end of 'The Wow Signal,' "man new songs are hard!"
Providing constant banter between songs, Taylor-Taylor, who promised the crowd he doesn't usually take pictures in bathroom stalls, took time out to mention a toilet paper brand he'd found in Australia called "BOWSCOT." He was taken aback by the fact you could make it look like "BON SCOT," after lead singer of AC/DC Bon Scott (you can see what he means by checking out his picture HERE)!
During"Z's (Zia McCabe) potty break," the rest of the band, Peter Holstrom and Brent De Boer, also left the stage leaving Taylor-Taylor to perform an oustanding acoustic solo of 'Every Day Should Be A Holiday.' Encouraging the audience to sing along with him because "Australia is a rock country" he swung a microphone in the audience’s direction and immediately the crowd joined in.
The headache-inducing, blinding strobe lights used randomly throughout the show were a bit out of place, harshly contrasting the backdrop mostly filled with smoke and shadowy lights. Diehard psychedelic fans clearly enjoyed themselves, but attention of the pop-song seekers may have been a little bit lost during the long stoner rock set. Taylor-Taylor, who was a contributor to the book 'Sex Tips From Rock Stars' published last year, still has an enchanting and charismatic stage presence which helps you forgive any mediocre moments during the show.
Aussie rockers The Vines showed they agree with the title of the Dandys debut album, the 'Dandys Rule, OK?' when they made a surprise appearance joining them on stage to perform 'It's A Fast Driving Rave-Up' together.
Coolly ending the set with 'Country Leaver,' the band shows no signs of slowing down or changing their style anytime soon. If you missed them this time around, keep your ears peeled for a new album Taylor-Taylor said will drop in February next year.
