What rules about Future is the calibre of acts they always manage to pull, and this year saw the likes of The Prodigy, Franz Ferdinand, David Guetta, Boyz Noize, Booka Shade, Does it Offend you Yeah, Spank Rock, and heaps more taking the reigns. Now, because of the sheer quantity of high calibre talent, it’s pretty much impossible to see them all, so let’s focus on some of the headliners shall we?
First on the list is Glaswegian rockers Franz Ferdiand. Now these boys were in the unusual position of being a rock band headliner at a predominately dance/electronica festival, so it was always going to be interesting to see how the crowd reacted to them. Anyone that was worried that they weren't going to pull the crowds and get the punters bouncing up and down like it was a House of Pain song - put your fears to rest. They killed it. They held their own so impressively and pulled one of the biggest crowds of the day, rocking out all the favourites and quite a few from their latest album. Nice work.
Next up was Guetta, and shit were people keen to see this guy. The rush to get a good spot was intense, and by the time his set started, it felt like everyone at the festival had rolled over to catch an earful. I felt sorry for anyone that was on a competing timeslot. The whole set went down a treat, but when he busted out the party favourites like 'Sexy Chick' and 'I Got a Feeling', people just lost the plot. There was a really good vibe in the air while David Guetta was rocking the stage, but that figures, seeing as all his music is the Audio description of a good time. There was a small incident when a girl ran on stage and grabbed Guetta, which visibly irked him, but he's a professional, and the show went on.
Now it was time for a whole new kettle of fish, in the form of the kings of hardcore electronica - The Prodigy. The things that's awesome for the die hard fans is that the boys have come back to Oz with their original line up, and oh man, it works! Right from the get go they dished the crowd an onslaught of heavy beats and somewhere along the line it ceased to be a live music show, and turned into an electronic infused spiritual experience. Unfortunately for the flow of the set the lights screwed up somewhere in the middle, and the boys had to stop for a short time while they attempted to repair them. The lights couldn't be fixed but The Prodigy finished the rest of their set anyway without letting it hinder them. 20 years in the game hasn't slowed them down a bit, in fact they're batter than ever, twirling and screaming on stage like a pack of rabid dogs. AWESOME!
Last of the headliners i managed to see was Booka Shade. While having a completely different feel to the Prodigy, this German duo has got their live gig downpat in their own way. The stage, including props, lights, and their music making equipment is all crafted to match the feel of their music. These boys have got some seriously smooth and intricate tunes under their belt, and the crowd most certainly appreciated it. By the end of the set i though the crowd was going to take famous people hostage and demand more songs as the randsom. Lucky for all the celebs in the VIP section this didn't happen, and everyone managed to leave the 2010 Future Music Festival feeling utterly satisfied, and probably a touch sunburnt.
