But that’s exactly what’s happened to poor old Jessica Simpson when her beloved Maltipoo Daisy was snatched by a coyote on Tuesday night (September 15).
Jess witnessed the bone-chilling abomination with her own eyes and - presumably having put up a chase first - took to her Twitter to share her woe.
She Tweeted: "My heart is broken because a coyote took my precious Daisy right in front of our eyes, HORROR! We are searching. Hoping. Please help!”
The fluffy, five-year-old hasn’t been seen since, but Jess hasn’t given up hope - despite pet experts across the land saying Daisy is dog meat.
Jess Tweeted: "Still holding out hope despite the a--holes that say it is a dumb thing to do… Daisy is my baby, why would I stop searching? I'm a mom."
Daisy – a cross between a Maltese and a Poodle - was a present from Jess’s ex-hubby Nick Lachey.
