She’s one of this generation's most beloved pop icons, has sold over 100 million albums world wide, and served up some of the most OMG-worthy moments in VMA History – so it was only fitting that MTV honour Britney Spears with her very own tribute at the award show!

Looking chic and relaxed in a shimmering little black dress, the starlet, who earlier this year released her seventh chart smashing album ‘Femme Fatale’ chatted to VMA correspondent super starlet Selena Gomez beforehand on the black carpet.

"You're a big inspiration to me and to a lot of other people," Selena said.

"[The] VMAs are giving you a huge tribute. How does that feel?"

"It feels amazing," Spears answered with a mega-watt grin. "It feels really, really amazing."

The starlet, who earlier in the night bagged best Pop Video for ‘Til The World Ends’ got the all star tribute treatment by the most fierce femmes in the biz.

First up Lady Gaga, who was still in character as her smooth alter ego Jo Calderone, gave a stirring introduction for Brit, as the ecstatic pop star looked on.

“When I used to perform at open nights in New York, one of my biggest inspirations was Britney Spears.

"Britney taught me how to be fearless… She’s a pop music legend and the industry would not be the same without her,”
Jo (aka Gaga) said.

“Throughout the years Britney has given us the most iconic videos and show performances and that’s why tonight, MTV is honouring her…”

That was the cue for a few dozen Britney look-alikes to take the stage to dance to a montage of her biggest hits including ‘Baby… One More Time’, ‘Oops I Did It Again’, and ‘Til The World Ends.’

As the starlet took the stage to receive the 2011 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, presented by Jo, an awkward exchange followed with an almost kiss!

“I don’t want Gaga to get pissed,” said Jo, before Britney said a breathy “Thank you,” and welcomed Beyonce onto the stage.

“She is one of the most talented people I’ve ever seen" gushed Brit.

“I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside of me!” B announced to the screaming crowd, referencing her baby bump which was visable through her glittering purple tuxedo, before launching into a heated performance of new single‘Love On Top’ from her new album‘4’.
