Since taking out the ‘X Factor UK’ crown last year, the gorgeous girls of Little Mix have gone on to enjoy phenomenal success in their home country, with two number one singles under their belts and a heap of adoring fans to their name!
Earlier this week, we headed down to a sun soaked Luna Park in Sydney to chat to Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall about their debut album ‘DNA,’ their dream collaborations and whether there’s any rivalry between them and heartthrobs One Direction!
MTV: Hi girls! So your single ‘Wings’ is really blowing up here, tell us a bit about it.
Jade: ‘Wings’ is an up-tempo, uplifting song about believing in yourself and not listening to any negativity that’s said about you. And listening to your mum! Mum knows best! We co-wrote it and we’re really proud of it, and we hope people smile and dance when they listen to it.
MTV: And your debut album ‘DNA’ is about to be released, what was the recording process like?
Jesy: It was amazing wasn’t it?
Leigh-Anne: Just to know that we were co-writing our songs and putting all our input into it was just amazing. And most of the things were coming from us as well – our personal experiences.
MTV: Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with in future?
Jesy: Well I think individually we’ve all got people we’d love to work with. I know I’m dying to work with Missy Elliott, I have since I was really little, she’s the dream person for me to work with. I’d love her to be on one of our tracks!
Jade: I think collectively we’d love to work with someone like Nicki Minaj.
Leigh-Anne: I want Usher to write us a really lovely slow jam! That’d be amazing!
MTV: You girls didn't know each other before being put together for ‘X Factor.’ What was the hardest thing about coming together as a group, and what was the best thing?
Perrie: Well the best thing is the confidence. We’re more confident in a group.
Jesy: The hardest thing was probably moving away from our parents and having to live on our own … But I don’t really think as a group we’ve really struggled or found anything hard because we generally think it was the best thing for us being put in a group.
Leigh-Anne: The thing I love as well is we all understand what we’re all going through - we all relate to each other because we’re going through it together. The friendship as well, I’ve found three new best friends, so that’s one of the most amazing things.
MTV: You’re label mates with One Direction and you’ll both have albums out next month – can we expect a bit of friendly chart rivalry?
(All): No!
Jesy: I think our music’s completely different. They’re a boy group, we’re a girl group – no, I don’t think there is.
Jade: We’re just mates with them really.
Jesy: We just hope we can achieve what they’ve achieved.
Leigh-Anne: We’re very proud of what they’ve done though. They’ve just done amazing…
Perrie: …They’ve smashed it…
Leigh-Anne: …And if we could follow in their footsteps that would be incredible!
MTV: Do you and One Direction ever give each other any advice or feedback?
Jade: I think especially during the ‘X Factor’ we got a lot of advice from One Direction … they just gave us a bit of advice, helped us along.
Perrie: They were really supportive of us on the show.
Jade: They kind of prepared us a little bit for what was to come!
Little Mix’s single ‘Wings’ is out now, and their debut album ‘DNA’ hits stores November 23!
