MTV Classic caught up with Kirk Pengilly from INXS and his daughter April who were presenting at 'MTV Classic: The Launch' to talk Gen Y, auto-cue and Beiber fever.

MTV Classic: You guys are presenting at MTV Classic, are you nervous?

Kirk: I’ve improved with my public speaking, but I’m always a lot more relaxed when there’s auto cue!

April: And he’s got experience with big crowds, but not so much with presenting, and I’ve got experience with presenting but on a smaller scale, so I don’t know, see how it works out but it all went well in rehearsal!

MTV Classic: You and Angry Anderson came out of the same school of rock…

Kirk: Yeah absolutely, we both came out of playing to pubs and I’m so excited for him to be performing with Slash, so looking forward to seeing him.

April: And he’s not as Angry as they say!

Kirk: Nah, he’s a bit of a pussy. [laughs]

MTV Classic: April as a generation Xer… Do you like the iconic old school tracks?

Kirk: Actually she’s a generation Yer ‘cause she’s lazy [laughs]

April: Well the 90s and 00s I’m familiar with, but I grew up with a real mixture, from Bob Marley and reggae to rock to R'n' B, pop, there’s no music I really can’t stand apart from hardcore techno-house and country!

Kirk: And then there was the time you liked Hanson

April: [laughs] And I also got up early the other morning to watch Justin Bieber, so I've definitely got Bieber fever! And I’ve always been a Linken Park fan…

MTV Classic: What about you Kirk? Suffering from Bieber fever?

Kirk:
Oh I think it’s fantastic for the little guy. Good to have a wholesome kid who’s a great singer that girls can loose themselves over!

MTV Classic: In early days did you guys get that fanatical attention?

Kirk:
Oh sure, in the early 80s when we were first starting out and starting to break through, I can remember some of the South American shows the screaming was so loud that I couldn’t hear the sound on stage. It was almost Beatles-esque! I mean, the fans are still great. Like us they’ve been through a lot, with Michael dying and new singers and accepting that. It amazes me still. On iTunes we’ve just released the platinum collection and it went straight to number one on iTunes and it’s still there a week later!

April: Congratulations Dad!

MTV Classic: And so what’s lined up? I heard Gary hurt his hand, are you going on tour still?

Kirk: Yeah that was a while ago, he had Carpal Tunnel, I don’t know exactly what that is, but your hand doesn’t work very well. But he’s got that fixed and he’s doing good. We’re definitely touring this year and we’ve been working on a record and re-recording what we consider to be our greatest songs and having different singers singing on them so that will come out later in the year.

MTV Classic: You’ve had some great success with your modelling April, what’s coming up for you?

April: Well I’m just trying to branch out a little, TV presenting and acting… I’m finishing up work on a film, and doing some acting training so if I start going overseas I’m totally prepared. So it’s back to school for me!

Kirk: And this time you’re going to concentrate [laughs]!

MTV Classic: Kirk, what’s your favourite decade of music?

Kirk: Always been a big fan of swing and that kind of thing. But you know the 80’s and 90’s were very kind to INXS , so lately I’ve been getting into the nineties dance music and there was a lot of crap, but there was also a lot of amazing stuff that was all about sounds and sound-scape and that’s the music that really listen hard to. But now I think I’m more of an iPod kind of guy so I find it hard to listen to a whole album by anyone these days.

MTV Classic: April what’s your favourite INXS song?

April: ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ always makes me tear up a bit. When they play it live I’m usually like, um, I’ll just pop backstage and check my phone ha ha… There’s quite a good ones, but it’s weird, I don’t listen to his music much …

Kirk: Neither do I! [laughs]

April: I really enjoyed the most recent album with JD Fortune called ‘Switch’ there were a couple of really awesome tracks. The one ‘Never Let You Go’, it’s kind of reggae'ish.

MTV Classic: Kirk what’s one of your proudest moments as a father?

Kirk: I’m just proud of her because she’s such a great girl and somehow she was brought up right! [laughs] She’s completely opposite to me, doesn’t drink, has never done drugs..

April: yeah he’s always like, why haven’t you got a million boyfriends, why aren’t you drinking?

Kirk: So it’s good, she’s learnt from my mistakes!
