This weekend a host of musicians and celebrities will come together for the Global Citizen Festival, an event which aims to highlight the issue of extreme poverty and urge world leaders and fellow citizens to do more to help the cause.
Rockers the Foo Fighters, Black Keys, Band of Horses, Neil Young & Crazy Horse and rapper K’Naan will all perform sets at the free ticketed event, which is set to take place on Saturday in New York City’s Central Park.
The festival will be hosted by Katie Couric, while socially-conscious celebrities including actresses Olivia Wilde (on behalf of the Half the Sky movement), Sophia Bush (Pencils of Promise) and Minka Kelly (World Food Program) and singers Selena Gomez (U.S. Fund for UNICEF) and Katharine McPhee (Malaria No More) all join the host committee.
The event is expected to draw a crowd of 60,000 and will also be simulcast live via the web by a variety of media partners.
"The Global Poverty Project is proud to have such partners to help carry the message of the Global Citizen Festival around the world," said Hugh Evans, CEO and Co-Founder of event organiser Global Poverty Project.
"This is a chance to take action towards ending extreme poverty in our generation."
The festival has been timed to create awareness around the UN General Assembly, which takes place this month in New York. At the General Assembly, world leaders will convene to debate the Millennium Development Goals and make commitments to end extreme poverty.
