The award-winning musician told MTV News that he was “having a meal in the catering area of the Adelaide Entertainment Centre and my manager sent me the message,” which informed him he was in the running for the Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ and Best Alternative Music Album for ‘Making Mirrors.’
“My band mates facetiously joked with me over lunch, saying, ‘Good on you, di**head, you got Grammy nominations!’” he recalled. “That was quite fun.”
The humble Aussie told MTV he’s honoured to be nominated for his Grammy Awards alongside some of his most inspirational artists from this year.
“I really love Frank Ocean's work. I think his mixtape and his album are fantastic, he's got an incredible voice and he's a really interesting songwriter,” revealed the singer, whose real name is Wally De Backer.
“On the more pop end of the spectrum, the first time I heard Taylor Swift's 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' I thought it was one of the most killer pop songs I've ever heard,” dished De Backer, who is nominated alongside both Swift and Ocean for Record of the Year.
But despite the fact that the singer is now receiving accolades left, right and centre for his music, De Backer still can’t quite believe the success this past year has brought him, especially with more mainstream audiences.
“I've always loved music that's pop, but maybe all the stuff I've loved has been a bit more left of centre and a little stranger ... I never thought I would find that much popular success because of that,” he revealed during a press junket backstage at the ‘2012 ARIA Awards’ recently, where he took home four awards.
“But then, yeah, last year has proved me wrong maybe!”
