Looks like Justin Bieber and his team pulled off the ultimate prank over the weekend!
Capitalising on a report that the singer’s laptop - featuring personal footage - had been stolen while he was performing in Tacoma, Washington, a Twitter account was opened under the username @gexwy with the user promising to leak Justin’s private videos to the world.
After a day of banter back and forth between Biebs and @gexwy, in which the user constantly teased the release of the footage at noon on Friday (US time) they finally tweeted,
"I told you I would post something WORTH watching and talking about," tagging Bieber and his musical collaborator Nicki Minaj with a link to their brand new music video for ‘Beauty And A Beat.’
Justin let slip that he was in on the whole thing just moments before the clip dropped.
"Since i was 14 i have had a lot of things said about me, from dying, to taking hormones, to dying again, to stuff about my family...to saying i had a baby with a woman i never even met. nude pics, drugs, my family, my character...but today...today i get to be in on it..." he wrote on Twitter.
Justin co-directed the music video for his new single alongside ‘Never Say Never’ director Jon Chu. The video is set in a water park and features dancers and synchronized swimmers having a huge party, intercut with some personal handycam footage of Justin and his crew messing around and playing ping pong. Rap princess Nicki Minaj also stars in the clip, dressed as a ballerina and indulging in a little dirty dancing with Bieber!
But despite the elaborate viral campaign, Justin’s rep insists that his computer was actually stolen.
"Be very clear, the laptop was indeed stolen in Tacoma. That was NOT a hoax," his publicist Melissa Victor wrote in an email to the Associated Press.
And according to the Associated Press, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said a report was filed online Wednesday, although he doesn’t forsee officers spending much time investigating.
"A lot of people got played," Fulghum said.
"It became a big media frenzy, so I guess that was the idea."
