The Leicester rockers were presented with the prize at London's Hammersmith Palais by friend and Oasis leader Noel Gallagher. The other nominees were Arctic Monkeys, Babyshambles, Muse and My Chemical Romance.
Kasabian brought their rollicking live set to Australia earlier this year with performances at the Big Day Out, and were one of the 'must see' bands of the line-up. The band also performed at the live street party for MTV's The Lair, and had sell out side shows in Sydney and Melbourne with fans spilling the streets following the performance in scenes not seen since Australia's World Cup victory over Japan.
Taking their name from Linda Kasabian, Charles Manson's getaway driver for his brutal 1969 murders, the Leicester based band have made headways in UK for their live shows and stadium sounds which are infused with British rock music from the last 20 years.
It also doesn't hurt that Noel Gallagher and Jet both site them as one of their favourite bands. On receiving the award, singer Tom Meighan said, "This is the first award we've ever won, so about f*cking time! Thank you NME!" Kasabian's single Shoot The Runner, and their album Empire is out now.
