It was the official launch tour for the Birdies’ glittering ‘60s-inspired third album, ‘Confetti’, and they had brought some pretty talented girls along for the ride (but that’s not to say the guys aren’t equally as talented).
First Felicity Groom dazzled the crowd with her soft, Sunday-afternoon tracks, strumming her guitar, as the audience attentively listened, sitting cross-legged on the sticky carpet.
Then Melbourne duo, Oh Mercy (with the help of their extended band), took to the stage with bassist, Eliza Lam (who was the focus), as she not-so-timidly played along as the only girl in the all-male ensemble. The group’s frontmen – Alexander Gow and Thomas Savage – were compelling as they played tracks from their new EP, ‘In The Nude For Love’, including the smooth ‘Lay Everything On Me’, ‘Seemed Like a Good Idea’, ‘In My Stride’ and ‘Needs a Woman’. All of the tunes washed over the contented crowd as they basked in the soft stage lights.
Next it was Little Birdy’s turn, and boy, did the crowd love them. Apart from being a sell-out show, there has probably never been quite as much love in the room as there was this evening for this foursome.
Katy Steele (wearing killer heels with buckles, tights and a marching band jacket) opened with ‘Brother’, with the crowd beating the rest of the band – drummer Matt Chequer, bassist Scott ‘Barney’ O’Donoghue, guitarist Simon Leach and keys player, Fergus Deasy – to the rhythmic claps that herald the end of the song.
The songs from ‘Confetti’ – ‘Come On’, ‘Stay Wild’, ‘Into My Arms’, ‘Hairdo’ and ‘Run, Run, Run’ – received a warm welcome as the audience sang along.
Steele performed ‘Beautiful To Me’ solo, kicking arse on guitar, as the crowd sang heartily back to her. After dodging a few fans yelling out “I love you, Katy!” and a few proposals of marriage, she even asked one vocal fella to get down on one knee to propose (he did, of course).
‘Bodies’ and the cover of Spilt Enz’ ‘Six Months in a Leaky Boat’ were favourites, as was ‘Summarize’, the second single released from ‘Confetti’.
The band ended with the title track, as the audience was showered with pink and green confetti.
